Some Questions
to Ask
Of course there are the standard questions:
-
What majors do you offer?
-
How much is tuition/fees?
-
What kind of financial aid do you offer?
-
What size are the classes?
-
Where are the residence halls and what are their amenities?
But then, there are the more targeted questions. These are the
questions that will get down to the nitty-gritty and give you a
fuller understanding of the campus, its offerings and its match to
your needs.
-
How does your academic advising system work and what training do
your advisors receive? This is important because, frankly an
academic advisor can either make or break the student’s academic
future. Sometimes advisors receive no specialized training
other than a current college catalog. Or, an advisor might be
a graduate student. This is not necessarily a bad thing, if the
graduate student has undergone extensive training. Other times,
the academic advisor is a faculty member in the student’s chosen
major and is very invested in the student’s academic success.
The academic advisor who truly cares about the individual
student is the best kind.
-
Is there any construction on campus or plans for construction?
While this can be messy and loud, construction means growth and
growth means a healthy institution and forward thinking.
-
How many of the most recent members of the graduating
undergraduate class have been accepted to graduate school? If
students are accepted into graduate school, it speaks highly of
the undergraduate program. A poor undergraduate program will
not prepare students for graduate level work.
